Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure to sit down and have an extended conversation with Jeff Echols, Assoc. AIA, CGP. Jeff works at an architectural firm (http://www.haus-arch.com/) and has been posting a blog on how to include green technology and products when RENOVATING or IMPROVING your home. The blog is full of information and provides that information so that you don’t have to be building a NEW home to get all of the benefits. Check it out and tell Jeff that GreenDeanTV sent ya!
Okay, so maybe GreenDeanTV didn’t influence Congressional legislation, but we would like to think that we are ahead of the curve. On Tuesday, April 22nd, Rep. Doris Matsui (http://matsui.house.gov), after watching the GreenDeanTV webisode on tree planting and energy conservation (LOL), introduced the Energy Conservation Through Trees Act of 2008. The legislation is intended to help improve air quality and lower the need for energy conservation.

The ASLA Government Affairs staff, in conjunction with Casey Trees, a non-profit tree planting organization (http://www.caseytrees.org/), began working with the Congresswoman early last year on this bill. The legislation would establish a grant program to utilize targeted residential tree planting techniques as a means of helping to reduce energy usage in homes across the country.
Now that Spring has sprung…plant a tree and it will help to lower your summer cooling bill. If you need help with the placement or selection of trees, check out the webisode or drop me a line with any questions.

Passive solar gain is the heat energy that is created as sunlight passes into a building. Solar rays coming through windows create a greenhouse effect that warms the interior spaces of your home. This is desirable during cold winter, but not so much during the summer.
Did you know that approximately half the heat gain in your home is from sunlight coming through windows?

Well, rest easy. Turns out the manufacture of common kitchen sponges is easy on the natural world. Most sponges are a synthetic version of the naturally occurring creature found on the sea floor. That’s right, you clean your pots and plates with a synthetic animal! They are one of the most basic animals in the animal kingdom, but they are indeed creatures of the sea. After my frustration last time I looked for good green sites, I just stumbled on to The Green Guide. I found the site while running a search on eco-friendly laundry products. They have a great product guide, but the rest of the site is equally informative and easy to use.
Check it out! http://www.thegreenguide.com/ I’m sure you’ll dig it as much as I do.
While searching the web for user friendly “green” sites I had a hard time finding anything but extended blogs masquerading as websites. I was seeking a site that could give me tips for leading a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. The goal was to find ways that I could change my living habits without spending a lot of money or spending lots of time on renovating my day to day living.

Hey, nothing says Happy Thanksgiving like a blog entry!
I had the pleasure of meeting Dan Smith at the Plyboo booth at GreenBuild07. Dan is a wealth of information when it comes to anything bamboo. Dan took the time to talk with me about the manufacturing process of bamboo products, which has always been a mystery to me. I mean, how do you take a round raw material and make it flat? Well, thanks to Dan, now I know! Dan was also happy to explain the carbonization process and how to spot quality bamboo flooring. He was heading to China after the show to oversee the manufacturing process. I hope that he takes a video camera! In the meantime, check out this video where Dan shares a bit of his great information:
